Camp Wing Haven songs

Sweet Mrs. Clarkson (to the tune of Old MacDonald)
Sweet Ms. Clarkson had a garden, E-I-E-I-O!
And in her garden she had some squirrels…E-I-E-I-O!
with a chitter-chatter here and a chitter-chatter there
Here a chitter, there a chatter, everywhere a chitter-chatter,
Sweet Mrs. Clarkson had a garden, E-I-E-I-O!

VERSES: ...had some birds…tweet-tweet.....had some chipmunks…scamper-scamper......had some rabbits…nibble-nibble…

Hermie the Worm
I was sittin’ on a fence post,
Chewin’ my bubblegum (smack-smack-smack-smack)
Playin’ with my yo-yo (woo-woo)
When along came Hermie the Worm
And he was THIS big
And I said, “Hermie, what happened?”
“I ate breakfast”

Repeat with:  “I ate lunch”     “I ate dinner”     “I ate dessert”    “I burped”

Take Me Out to the Backyard (to the tune of Take Me Out to the Ballgame)
Take me out to the backyard,
Take me out with the bugs!
Ladybugs, beetles and dragonflies,
If I look hard I may even see slugs (ew!).
Look, look, look in the bushes
Under rocks, on a tree, in the lawn--
For it's one, two, three bugs I see
And now they're gone!

It Must Be a Bird (preview video)
Look, there, flying in the air - it looks like a bird!
Look high, soaring through the sky - it might be a bird!
And we’ll know because...
Birds have beaks! Birds can sing!
They’ve got lots and lots of feathers on their wings!
Look, there, flying in the air - it looks like a bird!

Now, move your arms like a bird (flap, flap flap)
Now, sing a song like a bird (“tweet, tweet, tweet”)
Now, move and sing like a bird (flap and “tweet”)
Look, there, flying in the air - it looks like a bird!
Look high, soaring through the sky - it might be a bird!

Head thorax, abdomen, abdomen
Insect parts that fly in the wind!
Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen!

The Buggy Wuggy - to the tune of “Hokey Pokey”

(right arm bent) You put your right wing in,
You put your right wing out,
You put your right wing in,
Then you shake it all about.
You do the Buggy Wuggy
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!

(left arm bent) You put your left wing in,
You put your left wing out,
You put your left wing in,
Then you shake it all about.
You do the Buggy Wuggy
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!

(two fingers on top of head) You put your antennae in,
You put your antennae out,
You put your antennae in,
Then you shake them all about.
You do the Buggy Wuggy
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!

(body) You put your exoskeleton in,
You put your exoskeleton out,
You put your exoskeleton in,
Then you shake it all about.
You do the Buggy Wuggy
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!

In Wing Haven (To the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)

In Wing Haven, green and wide,
Birds all sing and flowers thrive.
Squirrels all high up in the trees,
Butterflies dance in the breeze.
Come along, let’s tiptoe near,
Whisper soft so birds can hear.

In Wing Haven, peace is found,
Nature’s magic all around!
Tweet, tweet, tweet, the robins play,
They flap their wings and fly all day!
Nestled close in shrubs and trees,
Wing Haven’s here for you and me!

And The Green Grass Grew - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTbswd1Q3-o&t=93s

Out in the garden.
There was a tree.
The prettiest tree.
That you ever did see.

Well, the tree was in a hole,
and the hole was in the ground.
And the green grass grew all around, all around.
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this tree.
There was a branch.
The prettiest branch.
That you ever did see.

Well, the branch was on the tree,
and the tree was in the hole,
and the hole was in the ground.
And the green grass grew all around, all around.
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this branch.
There was a nest.
The prettiest nest.
That you ever did see.

Well, the nest was on the branch,
and the branch was on the tree,
and the tree was in the hole,
and the hole was in the ground.
And the green grass grew all around, all around.
And the green grass grew all around.

And in this nest.
There was an egg.
The prettiest egg.
That you ever did see.

Well, the egg was in the nest,
and the nest was on the branch,
and the branch was on the tree,
and the tree was in the hole,
and the hole was in the ground.
And the green grass grew all around, all around.
And the green grass grew all around.

And in this egg.
There was a bird.
The prettiest bird.
That you ever did see.

Well, the bird was in the egg,
and the egg was in the nest,
and the nest was on the branch,
and the branch was on the tree,
and the tree was in the hole,
and the hole was in the ground.
And the green grass grew all around, all around.
And the green grass grew all around.

The Gardener Plants the Seeds - to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell”

The gardener plants the seeds,  [Stoop and pretend to plant seeds.]
The gardener plants the seeds
Hi, Ho, the garden-o,
The gardener plants the seeds.

The sun comes out to shine [Make a large circle with arms.]
The sun comes out to shine
Hi- Ho the garden-O
The sun comes out to shine

The rain begins to fall [Hands flutter up and down.]
The rain begins to fall
Hi Ho the garden-O
The rain begins to fall

The seeds begin to grow [Stand up slowly.]
The seeds begin to grow
Hi Ho the garden-O
The seeds begin to grow

The flowers start to sway [swaying arms]
The flowers start to sway
Hi Ho the garden-O
The flowers start to sway

The garden’s full of life [up to interpretation]

Hi-Ho the garden-O
The garden’s full of life!

To the tune of “There’s an Axolotl”
https://youtube.com/shorts/-7l8QcYhd9w?feature=shared
There’s a Little Blue Bird..

There’s a little blue bird in the gardens
Is the little blue bird coming back again?
If you ask the little blue bird,
If they’ll be back tomorrow
A turtle waddles in and then the blue bird flies away.

There’s a little blue bird at pond there
Is the little blue bird supposed to be there
If you ask the little blue bird,
If they’ll be back tomorrow,
A turtle waddles in and then the blue bird flies away.

There’s a little blue bird on the front gate
If it comes back tomorrow, wouldn’t that be great?
If you ask the little blue bird,
If they’ll be back tomorrow
A turtle waddles in and then they both sing you a song.

Chippy, chirpy, little birdy
Clicky, clacky, turtle happy

Silent Call & Response

All Directors, Counselors and Helpers will use a silent call and response strategy, Silent Squirrel, to gain their campers’ attention in the gardens. A silent call is important to use in the gardens due to the gardens being a sanctuary for birds and to be mindful of noise levels for our neighbors. For this method to be most effective, everyone must be consistent with its use. Campers will be introduced to the Silent Squirrel on their first day of camp.

HOW TO USE SILENT SQUIRREL

When you wish for your campers to stop what they are doing and listen, follow these instructions:

  1. Hold your arm up and make the Silent Squirrel hand gesture below

  2. Do not say anything in order to gain your campers attention

  3. When one camper sees the call, they will stop what they are doing, and copy your hand gesture

  4. Other campers will notice and follow suit

  5. Only when you have gained all the campers’ attention, proceed with your verbal instructions

Safety Information

Dehydration, Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke:

  • See graphic below. Know the signs!

  • Keep an eye on your campers and each other. Notify a Director of any concerns immediately.

Counselor & Helper Responsibility/Standards & Expectations

As a Counselor or Helper for Camp Wing Haven, you are essential for ensuring a successful Camp session. Your major responsibility is to oversee a group of Campers and help to provide a safe, fun, and exciting Camp experience.

Your duties as a Counselor or Helper should be taken seriously. Your primary goal will be to know where each of your Campers are at all times and ensure their complete safety. The needs and safety of the Campers in all situations must be considered from the time the Campers arrive at Camp until they are released to their parents or guardians. Beyond that, Counselor or Helper responsibility involves listening, guiding, encouraging and sharing your passion for nature and the outdoors.

You will never be asked to discipline a child for misbehavior, but always to encourage participation and acceptable behavior. All discipline will be handled by a Camp Director. Likewise, all medical needs and emergencies should be directed immediately to a Camp Director, no matter how small they might appear.

As a Counselor or Helper for Camp Wing Haven, you are expected to:

  • Attend and actively participate in mandatory Counselor/Helper Orientation;

  • Treat fellow volunteers and Wing Haven staff with respect;

  • Honor the philosophies and standards of Camp Wing Haven;

  • Follow the rules and guidelines of Camp Wing Haven as outlined in this document, as well as those presented at any other time and for any other reason;

  • Demonstrate an interest in the Camp traditions, ideals, events and activities;

  • Demonstrate an interest in the Campers, their needs, undertakings and special challenges;

  • Participate in all activities alongside campers with enthusiasm and spirit;

  • Respect the gardens of Wing Haven and all Camp materials, and instruct campers to do likewise;

  • Wear appropriate outdoor clothing, including the Camp Wing Haven t-shirt;

  • Avoid the use of phones or other electronic devices, including earbuds, during camp;

  • Arrive on time and stay for the duration of your volunteer shift;

  • Communicate with the Camp Director proactively if you are unable to make a shift, must leave early, or must arrive late.
