Join Wing Haven for a visit to the gardens of Winston-Salem! This day trip to the City of Arts & Innovation will feature historic neighborhoods, unique horticulture, and native plant gardens.
Our first stops will be to two private gardens in the historic neighborhoods of Waughtown and Buena Vista designed by renowned landscape architect Jeff Allen of J A L A, LLC, who will guide us through both tours and will be available for questions about his design techniques.
The Waughtown garden, dubbed an “Arts & Crafts Revival” by Allen, features whimsical garden decor and water features in an expansive backyard. In the Buena Vista neighborhood, we will see a garden Allen describes as “Relaxed Luxury.” Hydrangeas, beautiful stepping stones, and luscious green foliage decorate this smaller space.

Following our private garden tours, we will make the short drive to Reynolda Village for a delicious lunch at a charming, cozy Winston favorite, Theodore’s Bar & Market.

After lunch, our group will head over to Reynolda’s formal gardens. We are in for a treat here! More than a century old, the gardens and grounds were part of the original 1917 footprint for the Reynolda estate. Designed by Thomas Sears, Reynolda’s formal gardens are an oasis filled with hundreds of plant varieties, colorful garden “rooms” that serve as living collections, Japanese-style tea houses, pergolas, fountains, perennial and shrub borders, and specimen trees.
Director of Reynolda Gardens Jon Roethling will take our group on the private Director’s Tour to learn about the horticulture of the gardens, hear behind-the-scenes stories, and explore the garden design. As an added bonus, at this time of year we can expect to see gorgeous azaleas and cherry blossoms in bloom.
Bashavia Gardens
Bashavia Gardens
Our final stop of the day will be Bashavia Gardens, a native plant nursery neighboring Pfafftown, NC. In addition to the nursery in Pfafftown, Bashavia Gardens is an ecological garden design and services firm that creates gardens using almost exclusively native plants in their designs and sustainable practices in their garden management. Recently crowned the Green Business of the Year by the Piedmont Environmental Alliance, our group will learn about the history and mission and will have the chance to shop some of the native plants available.
The price of the trip includes charter bus transportation, light breakfast refreshments, and snacks and beverages throughout the day, as well as lunch at Theodore’s Bar & Market and the Director’s Tour at Reynolda Gardens. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes and be prepared for light terrain during portions of the tour.
