Speaker: Georgann Eubanks
The Fabulous Ordinary is a guidebook introducing a score of annual miracles that take place across seven states of the U.S. South. Writer Georgann Eubanks and photographer Donna Campbell spent three years exploring these natural wonders with the aim of inviting armchair readers and outdoor explorers to do the same and perhaps take children or grandchildren along for the show. For those new to the region, this book offers a deeper appreciation of the landscapes, history, and cultural influences of the South’s remarkable biodiversity. In her presentation at Wing Haven, UNC Press author Georgann Eubanks will bring us along on the journey to witness the Fabulous Ordinary.
Among some of the destinations that will be discussed:
Paddle alongside playful otters feeding in a crystal-clear, spring-fed river in north central Florida.
Watch thousands of red-headed Sandhill cranes noisily cavorting in an Alabama wildlife refuge in January, making their way north to their regular breeding grounds.
Hear bugling elk claim their territory and mates during the spectacular fall colors of the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee.
Look overhead as a half million purple martins come to roost for the night on a small island on a large South Carolina lake.
Hike through thirty gentle acres of dimpled trout lilies that bloom around Valentine’s Day in a remote south Georgia Forest.
Visit the home of miniscule gnat larvae that glow like stars in the dark on the dripping rock walls of an obscure canyon in Alabama.
