Policies and procedures

Wing Haven is committed to building and maintaining an environment and culture in which children and youth are safe and their best interests are furthered.

During Wing Haven camps (spring break, teacher workdays, and summer camp):

  • All staff and adult volunteers working with children will have a background screening.

  • All volunteers and staff will be trained on the appropriate code of conduct in working with children.  Retraining will take place on an annual basis.

  • Children will never be left alone with one adult (staff or volunteer).  At least two counselors/helpers or directors will accompany children to the bathroom or the foundation office.

  • Children may not be touched on areas of their bodies that would be covered by swimming suits.

  • If a child is injured and requires first aid, s/he will be evaluated & treated in the presence of at least two camp staff members, and if necessary, the parents will be notified.

  • Children will be released only to authorized persons.  Volunteers will not be responsible for the release of children; however, they may help with drop-off and pick-up during camp.

  • At the first reasonable cause to believe that child abuse exists, it must be reported to your Wing Haven supervisor.

  • Any information regarding abuse or potential abuse will be documented in writing. If impropriety is suspected or witnessed, a staff person will complete an incident report and submit it to Wing Haven’s executive director.

  • If Wing Haven believes that a volunteer abused a child, his or her conduct will be reported to appropriate authorities, and the volunteer’s Wing Haven involvement will be immediately terminated.

Most children who visit the gardens come with their school class or with a caregiver.  A representative of the school is to be with children at all times; while school groups are on site, we will follow their protocol.  Wing Haven staff and volunteers are never alone with school children, or with children visiting the gardens with their family/caregiver, on Wing Haven property.
