The Market Bulletins: Gardening for Love

by Elizabeth Lawrence

In the 1950s, Elizabeth Lawrence was introduced to the world of state-funded market bulletins by none other than Eudora Welty, who (unbeknownst to Lawrence) placed her name on the mailing list for The Mississippi Market Bulletin.  Out of that grew Lawrence’s fascination with a little-known side of American horticulture.  In these charming publications, farmers advertised machinery or livestock, while their wives (who shared Lawrence’s life-long passion for plants) advertised their herbs and perennials.  A proponent of preserving plants from old gardens, Lawrence maintained a lively correspondence with her “market ladies” for the rest of her life, and gathered an incredible wealth of knowledge - and plants. This is a book rich with traditional plant lore, herbal remedies, and vernacular plant names peculiar to different areas of the region.

Following Lawrence's death in 1985, Allen Lacy thoughtfully and masterfully edited her raw materials for publication.
